A Cabin In The Woods

During the late 70’s I saw a movie that remained a favorite of mine for years. “The Adventures of the Wilderness Family was a story about a family that moved to the wilderness of Alaska to escape the overpopulated and smog-filled big city they were living in. My children used to groan out loud when I would pull the video out to watch yet one more time! It was not the many “dangers” they encountered in the wild that drew me in, it was the beauty of their surroundings, and the lifestyle they chose that was so intriguing. Ever since seeing that movie, when life seems to overwhelm me and I want to escape my difficult circumstances, I often respond with a “cabin comment”. I might be heard saying, A cabin in Alaska is sounding better and better…” or “Where is that cabin in the woods when you need one!”

Just recently I found myself reading The Message translation of Psalm 55. I laughed right out loud when I came across these verses:

“Get me out of here on dove wings

I want some peace and quiet

I want a walk in the country

I want a cabin in the woods

I am desperate for a change

From rage and stormy weather”

I guess I am not alone in my desire to escape to a cabin in the woods! Although there are a few who choose a remote lifestyle (I have read plenty of books about them), most of us cannot leave our stressful lives or difficult circumstances behind to find a full time place of refuge in the wilderness. But a refuge does await us when we turn to our Lord for help. The Bible tells us that God is our refuge and strength, our help in times of trouble. When we turn all our problems over to God, and trust Him to care for us He provides a way of escape….. He is our “cabin in the woods”!

I have been to a few cabins in the woods. They are great places for retreats. I loved this post. It reminded me of our son. I don't know if he saw this movie or not but he would love it.
Thank you for sharing.
Blessings,
Charlotte

I love that translation of the Psalm. I've always wanted a cabin in the woods. Being in the peace and quiet of God's nature is so calming. I'll meet you in the cyber-woods my friend. Praying for you and Joel!

Gosh, this hit home for me, Renee!
I, too, have dreamt of "escaping" to a cabin in the woods -- more often than I'd like to admit. Sweet images of solace, refuge ~ and, here, I needent have moved a whit! His providence has been right Here, all along.
"Wherever we are, God IS .. and all is well."

Hugs,
Myra

The cabin life sounds good but the battle for HIM is seldom there :o) May He give us strength to stay and bloom where planted.

Hi Myra
Glad the post hit home for you! It is a great comfort that where He is all is well. I sometimes use a similar "mantra" ...Jesus is here, all is well! from the God Calling devotional.

I want that cabin in the woods! I used to have a house in the mountains (Cody, WY) until 9 1/2 yrs ago when we moved to the plains of Kansas. You are right, our real refugee is in God no matter where we are on this earth. Our ultimate retreat will be when he says, "Well done, good and faithful servant." Good post.

I favor reading the KJV or NIV, but every so often just love--and get a kick out of The Message. This is delightful. I loved this piece!

Glad you enjoyed it, Jan Lyn. I read the NIV mostly and sometimes look up the same verses in the Message...just to see.
