Thanksgiving Gratitude

The house is starting to smell like Thanksgiving! Pumpkin bread has been made ~ the regular kind for the family and gluten and sugar free for Joel and me. Pies are baking and the cranberry sauce is in the fridge along with a fresh turkey. The fridge has not been this full in a very long time.

Tomorrow our children start arriving from Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Southern Iowa. Please pray for them as they travel~ it is a busy day on the roads and we are expecting to see freezing rain, sleet, and snow in all of these areas!

We will eat our Thanksgiving feast on Thursday and celebrate Christmas Thursday night! We look forward to having everyone under one roof again. With the kids, in-loves, grandchildren, and us, we total 20 this year.

We have so much to be thankful for. Family, fun, fellowship, freedom to worship, and an abundance of food will grace our lives in the coming days. We pray the same for you.

God bless and Happy Thanksgiving!

Transition Thoughts on Thankful Thursday

As each morning wakens us, my husband and I find ourselves talking about retirement and just where that will be. Retirement is coming early for Joel, due to his (and my) battle with Lyme Disease and several coinfections. It is not what we had planned....not by a long shot. We had plans to travel, do mission work, visit all our children, in-loves, and grandchildren and see extended family. Those plans were all thrown into a giant dryer and spun around. As we take out each piece of our changed life, we are finding hidden blessings to be thankful for.

My illnesses slowly changed our lives over the years, but things went down hill when I became homebound six years ago. The spinning only got worse when Joel was also diagnosed with Lyme and coinfections 16 months ago and was put on disability. His ministry was put on hold until he took a less than part time job as an interim in a town nearby. This job was a blessing we were not expecting! Even with the interim job, thoughts of retirement are at the forefront.

Thus, we find ourselves in the midst of a transition. For the first time ever I hear my husband say, "I don't want to do this anymore. I am exhausted and I need to rest."

Today I am actually thankful for this time of transition. Oh, I am not thankful we are sick, but I am truly thankful we have the option to live on the permanent disability he has been given and for the option of early retirement. I am thankful that we have God in the center of all the decisions we need to make. I am thankful for the progress we have made in our treatments and the wonderful doctor who works with us to lead us towards better health. I am thankful for God's promises in His word that give us the hope we need. I am thankful that God is leading the way in the wheres, hows, and whens of this new and unexpected journey. I am so thankful that He loves us and wants the best for us.

Reading another blog today, I heard the words ~ I decided to look at my glass as half-full instead of half-empty~. No matter what circumstances we find ourselves in, there are plenty of blessings to keep our glass half full. I am thankful today for our half-full glass and the hope I have that some day soon we will be saying, "Our cup runneth over!".

Thankful Thursday Thinking

Last Friday our oldest daughter, son-in-love, and 2 grandchildren came for a 24 hour visit. Our children do not usually stay longer than that right now, because of the effect it has on our health. We try to talk them into a two day visit, but they are "strict" with us about sticking to these rules. We are hopeful that will change for us soon.

It was such a blessing to see them again after 8 months. We packed a lot of hugs, game playing, visiting, and food fellowship into those 24 hours! I am so grateful today for being able to connect with them once again. And I am so grateful for their willingness to drive over 5 hours one way to see us and turn right around the next day and drive home. We are blessed.

"Love, love love
Thats what its all about
God loves us, we love each other
Mother, Father, sister, brother
Everybody sing and shout
Cause that's what it's all about
It's about love, love, love,
It's about love.."
Sunday School song

Thankful Thursday Thinking

We take so much technology for granted in 2010. Blackberries, iPods, cell phones, Facebook, Skype...the list goes on and on. I think about all those people who are lonely and unable to connect with their loved ones and I feel so very blessed that I can. But how do I do that from my living room? Being home most of the time due to Lyme and chemical sensitivities/allergies, my interactions take place a lot on the phone or now Skype. The other day I was able to visit with my sister in South Dakota and "see" her again, and about once a month we are "skyping" with our oldest and her family. We see them only once or twice a year, so this is great. Our neighbors have been able to watch their first grandbaby grow week by week with Skype. What a blessing!

Recently I joined a conference call prayer group consisting of several people with Lyme disease who gather by phone twice a month to pray. I love this opportunity to pray as a group once again.

The online homes of bloggers have given me the blessing of many new friends, a ton of information, and the joy of expanding my world.

Isn't it all just amazing?! Today I am giving thanks for all the technology that has opened my world to online blogger friends, prayer groups, and "seeing" our loved ones with Skype. It is all a good thing!

Thankful Thursday Thinking

Rest, restore, renew. Today I have read three different posts by three different bloggers who have written about resting, restoring, and the need for renewal.

One person with Lyme Disease spoke on the need to rest her way to healing. "Fighting" Lyme disease is a full time job and requires strength people with Lyme seldom have. Maybe we need to let God do the fighting for us and rest in His loving arms which our doctors, practitioners, medications, supplements, etc. do the fighting for us.

Another spoke about feeling fragile and used the analogy of a hummingbird~ sharing that even the busy hummingbird needing time to rest. She felt fragile and in need of restoration. Being aware of and respecting our body's needs is the first step to restoring balance in our lives.

A third blogger shared a post entitled Rest. She spoke of the rest our physical bodies need, along with our minds and souls. It drew my attention as I am needing extra rest right now to give my body the energy it needs to heal, and I have been resisting that. Another "r" word!

Today God is clearly speaking to me about resting. Getting three different posts and devotionals on the subject is a good indication that I need to sit up and listen. Or rather lay down and listen.

Thank you Lord for loving me so much, you desire for me the very best~ and provide for me just the information I need to hear...not once, not twice, but three times. I am heading for my sofa, Lord. Thank you that I have the privilege to do so. I am resting my way to healing.

Thankful Thursday

I have been reading a few books lately on the subject of healing. I have this desire to learn more and in greater depth what scripture and other sources tell us about physical and inner healing. So far, what I have read has been exciting and fascinating. While studying this subject, I realized once again how blessed I am to have so many books at my disposal. Have you ever met a bookstore you did not like? I love those gift cards for bookstores also! Libraries are a wonderful place to go ~ and what a privilege to be able to check out books and read them for free!

This brings me to what I am giving thanks for today. The gift of books. On a shelf near where I am sitting right now I have 5 different translations of the Bible at my fingertips. Think of that! And on our bookshelves are some of my favorite "friends" by my favorite authors. I read these over and over again for inspiration and encouragement. When I am needing to escape from my circumstances I can pick up a book and be in Africa, Italy, or Ireland. Whether I am reading scriptures, fiction, inspirational or educational books, or more....there is nothing like holding a book in your hand! One of my favorite motto's is, "So many books to read....so little time!"

So today when I look around our home, I am giving thanks for the precious gift of books, and what they bring into our lives. We are blessed!

Thankful Thursday

The past few days have been hot and humid here.. Oh, not like the East Coast, but plenty hot and sticky, with dew points in the 70's, and the air like soup. It reminds me of when we lived in The Philippines. Hot and humid was the norm and during the monsoon season everything was always damp in our house because we did not have air conditioning for the first year we lived there. Being we were a cold weather crew, I am not so sure we every adjusted to it.

So today I am thankful for air conditioners. Those powerful little machines that bring cool air into our homes with the touch of a button, and make it possible to manage the heat. Square boxes that keep my body temperature regulated, and my emotional temperature even! And while I am at it I am thankful for the inventor of these wonderful pieces of technology....William Haviland Carrier from New York, who created the very first one in 1902. Thank you Mr. Carrier, and thank you God for giving Mr. Carrier the ability to do so!

Thankful Thursday

My husband and I celebrated our 42nd Anniversary this week. Our life together has been ~ like the subtitle to my blog~ "An adventure in faithful living....." And our marriage has been and still is ordained by God. I have told this story before, and never tire of sharing it. In fact, it is going to be next week's Memorial Box Monday post!

I will share the short version today! , Way back in 1966 Joel and I were "prayed together". Those who are prayed together, stay together! We were both attending The Lutheran Bible Institute in Mpls. MN. On a weekend when family events were planned, my older sister (who helped raise me) and her good friend came to visit. During their tour of the campus they met Joel and in a few short minutes just knew he was the one for me! Later they told me they had found the man I was going to marry and when they told me who it was I said, NO WAY!.....You see, I was a "city girl" and he was a "country boy".....Their response? We will pray about it! Just 18 months later we were married.

So today, I give thanks for the prayers of my sister and our family friend, who by divine urging knew we were to be together. I give thanks to God for blessing me with such a special Christian man to be my husband, the father of our children, and the grandfather to our many little blessings. I have been known to say, "I know how much God loves me because He brought Joel into my life!"
I am blessed.

Thankful Thursday Thinking

"Now thank we all our God

With hearts and hands and voices

Who wondrous things have done

In whom His world rejoices......"

Lately I have found myself humming the words to this hymn. I have so much to be thankful and praise God for! It always amazes me how He uses our circumstances for good...doing "wondrous things" in our lives!
~~~
Sometimes our blessings are hidden within our present situations, but they are there to be found! ~Like my husband having Lyme Disease and being on part time disability..... the hidden blessing is that I am spending more time with him than in our whole nearly 42 years together, and I love that! So does he!
~~~
When Joel realized he would need to be on disability due to having Lyme, he was so sad and worried...we both were. The hidden blessing in that was the ELCA was behind him 100% and it gave him time to begin healing. When Joel was able to work part time an opening came up for a nearby church. GOD"S TIMING! They knew our circumstances, and they knew Joel's ministry, and opened their arms to him! This interim position is filled with blessings! ~ He can work mostly from home, he can still do ministry, the people at the church love him, and he is no longer commuting 2 hours round trip a day to his last call. Praise God for His wondrous ways!
~~~
Another hidden blessing has come from my uterine cancer and surgery that followed in late March.....I realized how very much God is in the details of my life and how much He truly loves me! I also realized that even though I have been fighting Lyme for 26 years, my body still has some strength left to keep healing.
~~~
Our treatments for Lyme are not covered by our insurance due to the politics behind this disease....~ the hidden blessing? ~how we have seen God take care of us financially above and beyond our understanding. Amazing!
~~~
Our present circumstances are at times a burden, but if we focus on how God is working them out for good and blessing us through them??? Wow!
~~~
Hidden blessings give us a beautiful picture of God's amazing, mountain-moving wondrous ways. That is why today I find myself humming....Now thank we all our God......

Thankful Thursday

The day is almost over and I am winding down....sitting in my recliner with a laptop on my lap tray...checking out blogs and reading my emails. What a privilege to be able to sit in a comfy chair and look out over my corner of the world while at the same time connecting to people around the world. Isn't technology amazing!

More amazing is our God...a mountain-moving God who loves us so much. I am so grateful for all He does for me! He heals, He guides, He plans, He loves, He forgives, he strengthens. Thank you God!

Speaking of strength....I am also thankful this day for being able to fix lunch...roasted cauliflower and garlic along with turkey and bison burgers. This may not seem like a big deal, but this is only the second time in months that I have been strong enough to cook. It makes me so happy when I can do something for my husband Joel...he does so much for me! And to feel strong enough to do this??? Yahoo!

For this and much more, I am thankful, Lord.

Thankful Thursday

The past week has been filled with an abundance of blessings. My cup runneth over.

Today the sun is shining, the wind is gently blowing and the temperature is going to be a dry 85 here in the Midwest. A perfect day for porch sitting! I am so thankful that we can have the windows open to bring in the fresh air, and be able to hear all the birds. Our miniature schnauzer, Levi, is sitting at the front door enjoying the smells and sounds of a late May morning. We are blessed.

I am thankful that my trip to the dentist this morning eliminated any dental problem connected to my aching teeth. Going to the dentist is challenging when you react to all the chemicals they use, so I am glad it was a quick trip. I am also thankful that we see our Lyme doctor soon so we can try to figure out if this is now a Lyme problem. These beasts get everywhere.

I am thankful that my brother-in-law's open heart bypass surgery ( one week ago) went very very well. He has been home since Monday and walked to the end of the block and back yesterday! Praise God!!!

I am thankful for being able to go flower shopping with my husband and spend some quality time together. I am thankful for his willingness to plant those flowers for his wife!

I am thankful for telephones and email that connect us to the ones we love. Conversations with friends and family.....and conversations with God!

I am thankful for a the gift of life itself. It is precious and to be savored...one day presented to us at a time!

It has been a good week with much to be thankful for. May your week be filled with an abundance of blessings, and much to be thankful for.

Thankful Thursday Thinking

I am giving thanks today for my Brother-in-law's surgery going well! I am giving thanks for the doctors, nurses, and other staff who care for their patients. I am giving thanks and praise for the prayers of so many being answered this day with a resounding YES!

And just listen to this ~~~ his heart is going to work better than EVER in his whole life because even though he did not know it until the first angiogram, the right side of his heart has never worked. Not ever. While the doctors were inside doing 3 bypasses they also were able to bypass that area so now his WHOLE heart working! Isn't God amazing!!!!!! He is in all the details! To God be the glory!

Thankful Thursday Thinking

Today I am giving thanks for a hardcover spiral book that I have filled with stories about our grandchildren that we have observed or their parents have shared with us. This week I have been reading some of them out loud to Joel and we have laughed until tears roll down our cheeks over some of the things our precious grandchildren have said and done over the last 10 years.

This week I am thankful for a faster-than-lightening answer to prayer ~ God has given me the idea to create a book from these stories. I am both excited and apprehensive to begin this new adventure! And surprised too ~ I always thought I would write a book about living with chronic illnesses! Maybe that will come later...for now I am leading where God is guiding me!

Thank you God that you are a God of surprises!!

Thankful Thursday Thinking

Today I am giving thanks for all those who shared comments with me concerning the secondary medical problem I am dealing with. All your prayers carried me through this week of another procedure and the long wait for the biopsy results. Hopefully tomorrow the wait will be over and we will be able to take action as we make decisions concerning our options ahead.

Today I am giving thanks for scriptures giving me wisdom and comfort. Proverbs 3, :5,6 and Isaiah 30:21, 22 have come to me more than once in the past couple of days through devotionals and other resources.

I am thankful that I can trust God. Life is not always fair, but God is good and can be trusted.

I am very thankful for my husband Joel, his steady, never unwavering love for me over the years. I always say I know how much God loves me because he brought Joel into my life.

I am blessed.

Thankful Thursday Thinking: I Am Blessed

So much to be thankful for here in my corner of the world. Unfortunately, my focus has been on an ongoing uterus problem which involved a enodometrial biopsy and ultrasound in December, progesterone treatment in January, and now a visit to a GYN, scheduled hystoscopy for Monday and the possibliblity of cancer due to the problem not resolving. When worry fills my mind, it is a good time to give thanks for the many blessings around me.

I am so grateful for God's guidance in this process. He has promised to be with me and not abandon me, to hear my prayers. The Bible guarantees we will have trials, but it also guarantees we will not be alone in them. I am very blessed that I can trust and follow God through the good, the bad, and the ugly. Thank you God!

I am so grateful for my sweet husband Joel who is always there for me, encouraging, supporting, praying, calming, and loving me. How blessed I am to have him in my life. Thank you God!

I am so grateful for my loving family! Thank you God!

I am blessed to have a nice home, a cozy sofa sanctuary, and a warm wool comforter to soothe my body and mind on days like this. I am blessed to be near a good hospital with good doctors, and nurses that are well informed and compassionate. Thank you God!

I am very blessed to have the prayers of so many interceding for me. There is great power in prayer! Thank you God!

Thankful Thursday Thoughts

"Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight."
Proverbs 3:5,6

This past week has been a tough one for me. I have been dealing with a secondary health issue for several months and it has now set me back into a relapse with my Lyme and CFS/ME. To add to the mix my back has gone out and I was exposed to mold which I have a severe allergy to. I am spending most of the time laying quietly, unable to be on my feet much at all. I am weak, having extreme exhaustion, and an increase of pain. I have not felt this bad in over two years. My hubby is fixing my meals, and caring for me which is difficult with his health issues and attempt to work part time.

Our circumstances have given rise to resignation and depression in me and everything looks very grey. At times I confess it would be easier to just give up hope. On days like this I am tempted to wonder what God is thinking! Is this really how he wants us to live? Is there any hope for better days ahead?

Joyce Meyer mentioned this morning that "We may not know what God is doing, but GOD knows what He is doing. Our focus needs to be on TRUSTING God and His plan for our lives."

Proverbs 3 came to my mind along with Jeremiah 29:11...The Message says:

"I know what I am doing. I have it all planned out ~ plans to take care of you, not abandon you, plans to give you the future you hope for. When you call on me, when you pray to me I will listen. When you come looking for me you will find me."

Today I am thankful that I can trust God with all my heart. That He KNOWS what He is doing even when I cannot see the light. I am thankful that He will not abandon us to our illnesses, but has plans to care for us and give us a future. In this world and the next.

Today I am clinging to these verses, and as I spend the days putting my energy into breathing, resting, and healing, I give thanks for the hope I have in Christ Jesus.

Thankful Thursday Thinking

The earthquake in Haiti and continual strong aftershocks have devastated this small country. As usual, the children seem to suffer the most. Over the years many countries have worked hard to help the poorest country in the western hemisphere. Corrupt governments, hurricanes, and the like have continued to fight against improvements for the resilient Haitians. And now this. The people need safe shelter, water and food, and immediate medical care. It is confusing as to why it is taking so long for this to happen. Our prayers are needed.

Today I am giving thanks for our God being a God that moves mountains and make miracles happen. I am giving thanks for God loving us and hearing the cries of the suffering. I am giving thanks for all those who are reaching out to help the people of Haiti in so many different ways. And as I look around at the abundance of conveniences that make my life so easy, I am giving thanks for a safe home, more than enough food and water, and opportunities others in our world do not have. I am humbled. I am blessed.

Thankful Thursday Thinking

Today my thankfulness runs along the line of being able to curl up on the sofa or in bed with my wool comforter (affectionately named Woolie). I am having a few challenging days and to have the privilege to just retreat and take care of myself is a real gift when my body needs complete rest. God is with me, my hubby is close by, and my Woolie is soothing to my cold and weary body. I am blessed!
