In Quietness And Trust

In the past I would make a list of New Year's resolutions or intentions for that coming year, only to forget about them by February or March.  So last year I decided to join the many who, in place of resolutions, prayerfully meditate on one word for the 365 days.  I found it so powerful I decided to continue on with this practice.

I have been praying for God to give me a word to meditate on for 2013.  Last week I was was drawn to the word TRUST, and then the last couple of days the word REST has come up again and again.  These two words seem to be intertwined in my life.

In one of our morning devotional books Pam Kidd shared that God had brought to mind the words  "trust deficit" in response to the fear she was experiencing from all the changes in her life.  She reflected back to the blessing her husband ended every service with in the congregation he served for many years, and how she was now finding herself in need of hearing it.

"Go out into the world and fear nothing!"

It was just 6 months ago that I grabbed hold of those words when I read another Pam Kidd devotional with the same blessing ~ Go out into the world and fear nothing.  It seemed I was being brought back full circle as a reminder of the places I, too, had a "trust deficit".

TRUST

“Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding;
in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.
Do not be wise in your own eyes; fear the Lord and shun evil.
This will bring health to your body and nourishment to your bones.
Honor the LORD with your wealth, with the first fruits of all your crops;
then your barns will be filled to overflowing …”
(Proverbs 3:5-10 NIV).

On the other hand, God has sent me the word REST so often in the past 4 months that I cannot deny its importance.  Matthew 11:28-30 almost has its own heartbeat within me now, as the living Word.  Over and over again I have been hearing "rest in the Lord".

REST

Then Jesus said,
'Come unto me all of you who are weary
and carrying heavy burdens,
and I will give you rest.
Take my yoke upon you.
Let me teach you
because I am humble and gentle at heart,
and you will find rest for your souls.'" (NLT)
"My yoke is easy
and my burden is light.'" ( NIV)

Matthew 11:28-30

So two it is!  I am wondering what more God will teach me about trusting and resting in Him. I must have much to learn as He certainly has been bringing these two powerful words to my attention the past few months.

In December God "highlighted" this verse for me and then confirmed it when someone praying for my healing told me God shared it with her.  It is found in Isaiah 30:15.

"For thus says the Lord God, the Holy One of Israel,
In returning and rest you shall be saved
In quietness(rest) and trust shall be your strength."

Isaiah 30:15

It's so good to know that God gave you two words, too. I know that mine are a lot alike..."calm" and "still", but I still feel He wants me to meditate on both. Last year my word was "truth", and I still find myself going back to that word so often, too. Maybe when He gives us a word, or words, He means for them to be important to us for the rest of our lives!!! Wishing you and your hubby a wonderful 2013!!!

Hi Sharon....Probably not so strange as God seems to link His believers up in many ways....I expect what you share will give me insihts here on my own journey. Thanks for coming by.

I can see how the words are intertwined. I hope it is a good year for you as you rest and trust. I'll be pondering the trust deficit though for a while...

Hi Renee ~ I too have been studying up on rest - specifically what the Sabbath Rest means. It's so much more than a day. Happy studying and blessings for the new year. xo

Oh, what a meaningful post Renee. As I read, I the thought came to me that we can't "rest" unless we trust, or feel safe somewhere. I'm looking forward to reading what the new year brings to you.
I'm sorry my comment section has been kind of messed up. My old one allowed way to much spam and I was flooded with it. Spam is such a bummer... Thank you for persevering and commenting!

I think those two words go together beautifully: trust and rest. Praying you have a year full of both!

Your words were just what I needed. I think maybe I have been experiencing a trust deficit... have been so concerned about the future of our country, family illness and things I have no control over. I have been putting human limitations on Him. I really needed this reminder. If I fully trust he will give me rest. Look forward to your posts on these words this year.

Thank you Gayle for sharing what you did about how we cannot rest until we trust and feel safe somewhere....so very true! Our Father/God keeps us safe...Jesus is where we need to put our trust.

I have to admit I literally gasped when I read Isaiah 30:15 and how rest and trust were right there next to each other. So powerful, and I'd never caught that before. As always you've given me something to think about!

Hi Kim!!! God sent me the verse in Isaiah not only in a morning prayer time but in the notes the Sozo minister handed me. She had been meditating on my name before I arrived and that verse came up and she wrote it down. It confirmed for me that I was right where God wanted me to be.
